Bhavnath Mela & Maha Shivratri at Girnar

Last updated 10 October 2026

At the foot of Girnar, the ancient Bhavnath Mahadev temple comes alive once a year during the Bhavnath Mela, a fair linked with Maha Shivratri where Naga sadhus, pilgrims and devotees gather. Triloknath Ashram stands in this same area at Bhavnath Taleti.

Bhavnath Mahadev temple

The Bhavnath Mahadev temple sits at the base of Girnar in the village of Bhavnath. Local tradition says its Shiva linga manifested of its own accord, and that when Shiva and Parvati passed over the hill their divine garment fell at the spot now known as Mrigi Kund — which is why the place is regarded as especially sacred to Shiva worshippers. The temple is the first stop for pilgrims before they begin the long climb up Girnar.

When is the Bhavnath Mela?

The fair runs for about five days in the Hindu month of Magha, around Maha Shivratri, which usually falls between late winter and early spring. The Girnar region has two major annual festivals — this one and the Lili Parikrama in Kartik. Exact dates follow the Hindu calendar and change each year, so confirm them locally before booking your travel.

What happens at the fair

  • Naga sadhus — Shaiva ascetics gather at Bhavnath, and their ceremonial procession is the best-known moment of the mela.
  • Mrigi Kund bath — the festival culminates with a ritual bath in the sacred tank by the temple.
  • Night worship — Maha Shivratri is observed with night-long worship, bhajans and abhishek of the Shiva linga.
  • Folk music and dance — stalls, folk performers and devotional singing fill the grounds.

Why it connects to the Nath tradition

Girnar has long been associated with the Navnath and the 84 Siddhas, and its highest peak is named after Guru Gorakhnath. Shaiva ascetics of several traditions meet here. Triloknath Ashram, in the Nath lineage of Guru Gorakhnath, is part of that living heritage. Read more in Guru Gorakhnath: life, teachings and the Nath Sampradaya.
